News 12 got an exclusive look at what Saloni Sethi, the new commissioner of the New York City Mayor Office to End Domestic Violence and Gender-based Violence, has planned for her new role.

The call to help is personal for Sethi.

"I'm a child of domestic violence, I grew up in it. I moved here, I was actually born in India and moved here with my family. My dad was not only the abuser in the household, but our visa statuses were dependent on him," said Sethi.

Sethi says she looks forward to utilizing the city's resources to empower others.

"It's complex, we have a lot of issues and it's a complex city to navigate but we are well-sourced and have such a great provider community that we really are in a position to keep moving the conversation forward," said Sethi.

When asked what Sethi would say to her younger self, the message was clear.

"There is another side, even if it doesn't feel like it," said Sethi.
