Thursday marked six years since secret service agents and Capitol Police shot and killed Miriam Carey after she drove into a barricade outside the White House. Her family claims to this day that it was unjustifiable.
Carey's family honored her life in Bed-Stuy Thursday night at Restoration Plaza.
Police say Carey tried to ram her car through a White House barrier, which led to a high-speed chase to the U.S. Capitol with her 1-year-old daughter in the back seat. Carey was shot multiple times during the chase.
At the time, authorities had said Carey was diagnosed with postpartum depression and psychosis.
Relatives underscored that the shooting was not justified and want the officers involved to be held accountable.
Carey lived in Connecticut but hailed from Bed-Stuy. At Thursday's ceremony, loved ones released butterflies and said Carey's name five times for each gun wound they say she endured.
The family is also reaching out to local officials in their effort for justice.
"The idea of a woman, a black woman, being shot in the back by law enforcement while she's driving away, you know, that is a terrible thing to have to try to deal with not only as a family, but as a community," says Councilman Robert Cornegy.
Cornegy says that he, along with other elected officials, plan to send letters to the Department of Justice demanding the case be reopened and thoroughly investigated.
