FDNY: 2 students suffer 3rd-degree burns in experiment explosion
Two Morris High School students were sent to the hospital with serious burns after a science project caused an explosion in a lab Friday.
According to the FDNY, two girls have third-degree burns on their faces, arms and hands following an explosion during a science experiment.
The FDNY's assistant fire chief says a “carbon snake” experiment that had been going as planned caused the explosion.
"The alcohol vapors that were in the bottle escaped and traveled across the table," says FDNY Asst. Chief Joseph Woznica. "When it reached the flame that was already ignited, it flashed over and jetted across the table and burned the two girls."
Fire crews responded to the Morrisania school on Boston Road Friday afternoon. The students were taken to Jacobi Medical Center.
Fire marshals are doing a full investigation. The Department of Education says the lab where the incident occurred will be closed until the investigation is completed.
