Ten families were displaced after the FDNY said heavy smoke and flames ripped through an apartment building on Rochambeau Avenue near East Gun Hill Road.

Officials said the fire started shortly after 12 p.m. on Friday on the third floor of the complex, then spread to the fourth and fifth floors.

Neighbors described the scene as pandemonium, with some neighbors banging on apartment doors to help other tenants.

“Everybody [hit] the door [yelling] ‘On fire!” said Jose Monan.

Karina Torres said she’s thankful for those neighbors, who helped rescue her two-year-old yorkie, Leah.

“I thought I lost [Leah] and stuff, but she’s good now,” said Torres.

Torres said she’s lucky to have Leah, but her fifth-floor apartment is now gone.

“It’s just scary,” said Torres. “Everything is damaged in my apartment.”

The FDNY said six people were hurt, mainly from smoke inhalation.

One of the victims was a 2-year-old girl who lived on the fifth floor.

“She was brought up to the roof initially to avoid some of the smoke,” said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Mike Woods. “When the smoke subsided enough, we removed her down to the street to EMS that were awaiting.”

The FDNY said all six people are expected to be OK.

The Red Cross said they are assisting displaced tenants by providing temporary shelter.
