Multiple firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire in Williamsbridge Friday morning.
News 12 is told three floors of the building on Holland Avenue were engulfed when crews arrived around 3:30 a.m.
“We were challenged with having to put out the fire in three floors and control the fire on the exterior of the building to make sure it didn’t go to the side, and we contained it to one building,” says Deputy Chief Michael Gunning.
Officials say it started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second and third floors, taking over the entire building.
It took crews an hour and a half to get the fire under control. News 12 spoke to the tenant whose apartment caught on fire on the first floor, and she says all she remembers is an electrical outlet sparked in one of the rooms and seconds later the mattress caught on fire.
News 12 is told several people were injured, including four firefighters.
The Red Cross is on scene assisting those unable to go back into their apartments.
The Department of Buildings is investigating whether the building is safe for tenants to go back in.
