In the wake of the fatal Woodycrest Avenue fire, city officials held an emergency preparedness day Saturday to advise Bronx families on how to prepare for a worst-case scenario.Virginia Mewborn, of the city?s Office of Emergency Management (OEM), said the city is trying to make sure the community is prepared for unexpected events such as the Woodycrest Avenue fire that killed nine children. Officials said they found two smoke detectors in that home but neither of them had batteries in them. Officials told residents smoke detectors are one of the most important safety tools they can have in their home and advised residents to change batteries twice a year. The fire department?s Fire Safety Education Unit also was on hand to teach children how to stop, drop and roll, and stay low and go when there?s smoke in the house. For other emergencies, the OEM suggested families prepare ?go? bags filled with water, food and a flashlight. It also said families should talk to each other about plans for different types of emergencies.
