Workers at Barboncino in Crown Heights made history as the first-ever unionized pizzeria workers in New York City.

The 40 employees achieved their goal after asking for better working conditions for the past year. After failing to negotiate with upper management, they made the decision to file to become unionized with the National Labor Relations Board in May.

Restaurant representatives and committee members voted earlier this afternoon in favor of the union. The owners of Barboncino say they’re aware of the results and are looking into the next steps of the process. Workers say that their next steps are negotiating for better wages, working conditions, and benefits.

“Honestly I feel really proud to be here right now,” said server and bartender Andrea Lopez. “This is such a historic moment and I get to be a part of it, it’s really thrilling.”
