Borough President Vanessa Gibson hosted the flag-raising event alongside the Bronx LGBT Expo.
They spoke about the importance of inclusivity and acceptance, and they honored those who have made an impact in the LGBTQIA+ community.
“The flag-raising is a symbolic gesture of unity, respect and commitment to equality for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” said Connie Pacheco, a coordinator with the Bronx LGBT Expo.
After the ceremony, advocates and honorees gathered together to raise the flag and officially kick off Pride Month. Gibson says this is just the start to a monthlong celebration filled with Pride events in the borough.
Gibson says the flag will remain up the entire month, symbolizing the Bronx’s support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
