Flames tore through a Mott Haven building at Cypress Avenue and East 140th Street Thursday night.
Sources say the fire broke out on the top floor of the six-story structure.
Hundreds of people witnessed their homes burning up from outside the building.
Authorities reported no known injuries Thursday evening, but firefighters were still on scene.
