Hundreds of people lined the Nautical Mile in Freeport on Saturday to watch one of the largest holiday events on Long Island -- the village's tree lighting and boat parade.
“It’s a big boating community. They call it the boating and fishing capital of the northeast United States…it’s just going to be another great night for our residents and kids in the Village of Freeport,” said Mayor Robert Kennedy.
Santa Claus made a stop at the village.
“I see all the good boys and girls in Freeport and all over the world. Merry Christmas,” he said.
Santa then led a parade of 40 boats, decked out with bright lights and holiday decorations.
“I love how it brings the community together and I like to see the boats with the nice lights,” said Lily Chiofalo, of Oceanside.
The holiday event was also an opportunity for attendees to donate to local churches.
