Garrison FD boat suddenly sinks in the Hudson River
A Garrison Fire Department boat suddenly sank in the Hudson River.
"We just put it in Sunday. It ran fine coming all the way from Peekskill. We followed it all the way up and there didn't seem to be any problems,” says Garrison Fire Department Chief Jim Erickson.
Investigators will look to see if the 21-foot boat suffered a mechanical failure.
The small vessel was moored about 300 yards out from the Garrison Yacht Club. The manager there believes the rainy weather Monday night played a role in the boat becoming submerged in the Hudson River.
Once salvage crews raise the boat from the bottom of the river, it will be taken to a dock at West Point. From there, it will be taken to a local fire station for inspection.
Fire officials say the boat, which they have been using for about three years, is very important to the department.
Garrison fire officials say this is the first time anything has happened to one of their boats.
The department says the sunken boat and all its equipment were worth about $25,000.
