A man is recovering after being trapped inside a burning building in Brooklyn.

Genesis Batiste says she heard her grandfather scream that sent her running from her bed around 7:30 a.m.

"As soon as I opened up the window a big black puff of smoke just hit my face,” says Batiste.

Batiste says it took a little while, but eventually first responders were able to get to her grandfather and bring him to safety.

"He is breathing, he's talking he's fine. He just has black char on his face, also he has a little scar laceration, his eyes a little bloodshot,” says Batiste.

He and a firefighter were both taken to the hospital in stable condition.

As for Batiste and her family, she says it's sad seeing her family home like this, but is just grateful they all made it out.

"We lost a lot, but as long as we have our lives and our family that's more important,” says Batiste.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
