The Greenwich Police Department is investigating a deadly crash that happened early Saturday morning.
Around 2:09 a.m., a police officer was on Delavan Avenue when they saw a Lexus LS400 heading east at about 50 mph in a 25 mph zone.
Police said that the car then went through a red light at Delavan Avenue and Frontage Road.
The officer tried to follow the vehicle to make a stop, but a short time later came across a crash on W. Ritch Avenue near the Byram Shore Tennis Courts. The car had hit a utility pole and was heavily damaged.
Emergency crews from Greenwich Police, Fire, and EMS responded. The driver was pulled from the vehicle but died from their injuries. A front-seat passenger was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
As of Sunday afternoon, W. Ritch Avenue was still closed between Byram Shore Road and the I-95 Northbound Exit 2 ramp because of ongoing utility repairs. Drivers are being told to avoid the area and find alternate routes.
The driver’s name has not yet been released as authorities notify the family.
