Group of middle school students turns class project into $3 million of community funding

The project started as a class assignment in 2019 when students were asked to find a way to fix a problem in their community. They sent a letter to then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who funded the idea with $3 million.

The Hamilton Street Pedestrian Bridge recently got a makeover after the students at Harbor Middle School turned a class project into a positive change for the community.
The project started as a class assignment in 2019 when students were asked to find a way to fix a problem in their community. They sent a letter to then-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, highlighting the many safety issues with the footbridge.
He responded by allocating $3 million to make repairs.
Last month, those students celebrated the completion of the work, and they’re already looking for another project to aid their fellow New Yorkers.
The students are making prototypes of a wind turbine assembly plant, which Mayor Eric Adams has already said will be built near their school.
