A memorial service was held in Harlem Thursday to mark three years since the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer.
His death sparked protests nationwide and around the world, calling for changes to policing.
His long-lasting legacy continues to change lives and bring awareness to police brutality.
Floyd’s family and supporters held a service in his honor at the Convent Baptist Church.
"We’re remembering all these people died senseless death, you know. This is why I feel it’s important to keep bringing awareness now,”
This was the first time the "We are Floyd" nonprofit held a memorial. Terrance Floyd is from Brooklyn, and he said it was important to honor his brother's life and the systemic changes his death started for African Americans and other minorities in a place close to his home.
Although Floyd’s death has sparked conversations, people in the area said they are still waiting on government action when it comes to banning chokeholds, no knock warrants and changing laws that protect law enforcement from accountability.
President Joe Biden called on Congress to make changes to police reform and said he will continue to fight for police accountability.
