308ds agoStudents at a Westchester high school unveiled a mural to celebrate the country's multiculturalism.
It comes as the U.S. Senate on Tuesday unanimously passed a bill to establish Juneteenth as a legal public holiday.
Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, is celebrated on June 19, and recognizes the emancipation of formerly enslaved African Americans.
Hastings High School is celebrating the diversity with a 35-foot-high mural.
It was organized by a group of students of color and painted by students and staff.
The colorful display even has a poem by Maya Angelou about diversity's rich tapestry.
Lou Adioietro, Hastings High School's principal, says he's proud of the work his students did to put the mural together.
"Our students worked really hard, our Affinity group led the charge... There's opportunities for us to grow as a district... and I think this is our first step in that direction," he said.
