The heat is on in New York City.
In response, the city has activated its heat emergency plan and flood emergency plan as it prepares for the possibility of flash flooding Tuesday evening.
City pools are operating on extended hours till 8 p.m. on Tuesday. A long line formed outside the Van Cortlandt Park Pool just before 4 p.m. as they prepared to open for its second round of swimmers for the day.
"We were trying to reduce the water and the air conditioning use inside, we come to the park and use the sprinklers," said Wanda Guzman, who lives nearby.
The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory, as the borough is experiencing temperatures that feel like almost 100 degrees. However, the sunshine isn't expected to stick around until sunset. The Office of Emergency Management is launched their flood emergency plan that includes crews monitoring for power outages and downed trees.
"Please make sure you are not walking or driving through flood waters, if you see a flooded street turn around and drive another way, If you live in a basement take extra care, make sure you are monitoring the forecast and that you are signed up for alerts that you have a plan in place to get to higher ground should you need to" said Zachary Iscol, commissioner of the Office of Emergency Management.
