Now that heating season is in full swing, News 12 wants to remind viewers about space heater safety.
News 12 spoke with William Pedone, the owner of Van Nest True Value Hardware, on their supply and what people should do to keep safe while using these appliances.
"Don't put anything in front of it. That's the first and foremost, give it a clear free area where it can circulate the air properly," Pedone said. He also warned against using power strips and extension cords.
FDNY also released a list of safety tips to follow while using space heaters.
The agency said plug the space heater directly into an outlet, no power strips, only use one appliance at a time, keep it 3 feet away from combustibles and turn it off before you leave or go to bed.
