The city's largest wholesale food market could be getting a big upgrade.

The Hunts Point Food Distribution Center is home to The Chef's Warehouse and many other facilities.

The center generates billions of dollars in sales and is comprised of meat, produce and fish markets.

"Most of the food that's in your local supermarkets are in here and everywhere else," says Nikko Torres, an employee at The Chef's Warehouse.

According to the city's Economic Development Corporation, the center distributes 4.5 billion pounds of food annually and 2.3 billion of those pounds go directly to New York City eateries.

The food distribution center is comprised of at least 115 public and private industrial food businesses that employ about 8,500 workers, but more jobs are expected to come.

Hundreds of more career opportunities are expected to come once the center gets its next food facility, which is expected to be in the works.

"I think it's real good because there's a lot of people out there jobless and it's giving them opportunities to get a job," said Dempsey Purnell, an employee of The Chef's Warehouse. "Maybe it will bring down the homeless."

The initiative is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio's $150 million plan to make the food distribution center even better.

The city is now asking what food businesses are interested in pursuing the development of a new food facility on a 7.5-acre site within the distribution center.

The city's Economic Development Corporation is asking anyone interested in developing the site to fill out a "request for expression of interest" form on their website.
