The man shot at a party in Mott Haven early Tuesday morning spoke exclusively with News 12.
Dezinier Haskins spoke to News 12's Nadia Galindo from his hospital bed at Lincoln Hospital.
He said he was shot five times in his legs and walked himself to the hospital to get help.
Police said the shooting happened on Walton Avenue just before 3:30 a.m. at the party.
Haskins confirms it was his 26th birthday being celebrated.
He said he stepped outside to get fresh air where some people were arguing, and then shots rang out.
Haskins said he was shot four times in the inner thigh on one leg and once in his shin on the other leg.
The Marine Corps veteran said he shielded his twin brother, who was grazed by a bullet, as well as his best friend.
He said his military service helped him prepare for what he did next, he walked himself to the hospital.
"I couldn't stay there, I couldn't stay in one spot knowing I was bleeding," Haskins said. "All that was coming to my head was I did not want to die yet, I did not want to die yet."
Police said one person is in custody at this time and that they are searching for four other suspects in connection to the shooting.
