Initiative offers fresh produce to seniors
In an effort to get the Bronx away from the title of “unhealthiest county" in New York state, a new initiative is trying to help seniors eat healthier.
The "Not 62" campaign is targeting senior centers across the borough in an effort to make the Bronx not 62nd out of 62 New York counties when it comes to health.
The health initiative, put on by Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. and the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center, offers a produce plan for seniors for just $8 cash or EBT.
The weekly bags of fresh fruit and vegetables are delivered to more than five Bronx senior centers. The bags include beets, tomatoes, peaches, kale and other fresh produce from local farms.
