A Bronx family who lost its home to a fire says their insurance company isn't helping them find a place to live.
The Quinones family's home was destroyed by a fire on Dec. 13. The family had a hotel to stay in temporarily, but the insurance company, National General, told them they needed to leave because it wasn't paying for them to stay there any longer.
According to the family's adjuster, Michael Bilt, National General Insurance is claiming the homeowner, Carmen Quinones, did not actually live in the Briggs Avenue home. Therefore, National General is not picking up additional living expenses.
Bilt says that Quinones has a car registered at her daughter's home, leading the insurance company to claim she lives at that second address.
News 12 is told National General has been asking Bilt to prove Quinones' main address is in fact the home that burned down. Bilt says he has handing over Quinones' driver's license, social security documents and bills, all addressed to the home.
He says that the company he works for, Atlas Adjustments, laid out $9,000 for the Quinones family while they are displaced. He says he expects National General to not only reimburse them, but to get the family back into hotel.
News 12 reached out to National General Insurance for a response to the case, to which the company replied it does not publicly comment to the media on investigations to claims that are pending.
