Students at Roosevelt Middle School were able to witness history at a special assembly Friday.

An eighth grade U.S. history class watched the White House celebrate a day after the Senate confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson to be the first Black female Supreme Court justice.

For many of the students, especially the girls, Jackson's confirmation proved to be a moment of promise and hope.

"It inspires me because there's a lot of things that Black women can do," says Esmia Thomas. "And now that there's a Black woman doing something we couldn't do before, we can do more."

Another student says it's proof that Hispanics, Asians and other ethnicities can make it to important positions.

The class erupted in applause several times while watching the ceremony.
