The son of a Bronx EMT worker, who was killed in 2017 while on the job, recalled the day he lost his mother as he prepares to see her killer for the first time at his sentencing.
Jose Gonzales was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of 44-year-old Yadira Arroyo after stealing her ambulance and running her over in March 2017.
Justin Robles, 22, says he was at a restaurant with his dad when they got the call from his grandmother. Robles says it was the worst day of his life.
"As time goes by it gets a little better, but not really," says Robles.
Robles says life has not been easy for him and his four brothers.
"Our mother meant a lot to us," says Robles. "Now that we continue our lives without her, it's devastating."
Robles says he is grateful to his family for shielding him and his brothers during the six long years of court delays and setbacks.
Gonzalez is scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday. He faces 25 years to life in prison.
