The Bronx Jewish Center put on a celebration in Pelham Parkway to bring Jewish Bronx residents together for the holiday of Sukkot.
Sukkot, meaning hut in English, is a celebration where Jews gather in a temporary home known as a sukkah. The Jewish holiday of Sukkot spans through the end of the week.
A sukkah has four walls, with the ceiling made of different materials from trees and the ground. In the sukkah, Jewish observers of the holiday eat, sing, relax, and even sleep for the eight days of the holiday.
Rabbi Saadia Pewzner says when one is in the sukkah, they should feel cradled by god.
"We celebrate being in god's camp. God's encamping us, god's taking care of us," said Pewzner.
Hosting Wednesday's celebration gives Jewish Bronx residents an opportunity to celebrate with one another and foster community. Everyone has the opportunity there to be blessed with the lulav and etrog, which represents different aspects of what God has created.
Rabbi Pewzner says it's all about the idea that, "When we go into god's canopy, we're all one, we're all united."
Sukkot ends Friday evening and sundown, followed by the celebration of Simchat Torah this weekend.
