Immigrant workers and advocates from multiple organizations gathered in the Bronx after the U.S. Labor Department announced a new workers' rights policy.
The policy ensures the discretion and protection of immigrant workers that are being abused or exploited. For those with Red de Pueblos Transnacionales, this is a step in the right direction.
“The laws haven’t been in favor of undocumented workers,” said Diana Sanchez, an organizer with Red de Pueblos Transnacionales. “And the thing is usually when there are cases where there’s an employer who is abusing their workers, they usually tell them that they’re going to call ICE on them.”
Advocates and workers from El Centro del Inmigrante and the Blue Ribbon Commission were in attendance today, saying that this is just a step forward in what is and will be a long fight for abused and exploited immigrant workers.
