A group of state lawmakers are pushing Mayor Bill de Blasio to raise the wages of city police officers.

State Senator Andrew Gounardes, the chairman of the Senate's Civil Service and Pensions Committee, along with nearly two dozen Democrats sent a letter to the mayor Monday pointing out how low the wages are for city officers compared to neighboring departments on Long Island and in Westchester.

Sen. Gounardes released a statement reading in part: "New York's police officers are among the hardest-working people anywhere. They should be paid fairly for the work they do. Instead, they are paid 40% to 50% less than the officers in neighboring counties...which makes it harder to keep them in NYC in addition to being unfair. It's time to pay NY's Finest what they deserve."

City Hall responded to the request in a statement reading: "Our door is always open for bargaining with any union with an outstanding contract. We look forward to reaching a resolution that is fair to both police officers and taxpayers, as we did in 2017."
