LI police departments to ramp up patrols at polling places in hopes of deterring voter intimidation

Long Island police departments say they are taking extra steps to make sure voters will feel safe on Election Day.
Local police departments on Long Island say they are ramping up patrols in preparation for any possible voter intimidation at polling places. It comes as businesses nationwide are boarding up and bracing for possible Election Day unrest.
Experts say the concern comes from repeated comments from President Donald Trump in the first presidential debate, including one about voter fraud where he said, "I'm urging my supporters to go into the polls and watch very carefully because that's what has to happen."
Hempstead Village police announced Monday they'll be monitoring all 13 of its polling places.
"We will have extra personnel assigned throughout the day, we will have a lieutenant and a sergeant out there also checking the polling locations just to make sure there are no irregularities," says Hempstead Village Police Chief Paul Johnson.
A spokesperson for the Suffolk Police Department News 12, "Although there is no credible intelligence indicating threats to disrupt voting, the Suffolk County Police Department is prepared to respond and address any type of disturbance at polling places. All personnel have been briefed regarding potential protest activity related to elections and response plans are in place."
Nassau Executive Laura Curran also chimed in, saying city and village police departments have a "seamless relationship."
"We work very well with our municipal partners and Election Day will be no different," says Curran. "We're coordinating were sharing information and making sure that we're keeping our residents safe."
