Local leaders gathered in Sunset Park to denounce the slew of recent anti-Asian attacks and to stand with the Asian American community.
The outcry comes as NYPD says there are 39 reported hate crimes against Asian Americans in just the first four months of 2021, compared to 28 just last year.
Reps. Yvette Clark, Nydia Velasquez and Grace Meng toured several businesses in Sunset Park Friday to show their support.
They’re looking to introduce legislation that would provide resources to victims of anti-Asian attacks.
Employees in the area, like Richard Tong of Get Well Pharmacy, say the attacks are impacting business.
"Many people are still afraid to come out because of the pandemic, and also because of the Asian hate that's been reported. So sometimes we have to deliver the medicines to them,” said Tong.
