With the tax deadline less than one day away, one local organization is helping those waiting until the last minute with their taxes.
BronxWorks offers a VITA program – VITA stands for volunteer income tax assistance – designed for residents with low to moderate income levels and those with disabilities. The program also helps the elderly and those who are not native English speakers with their tax filing as well.
For Guadalupe Garcia Vasquez, coming to BronxWorks for tax help has become an annual tradition. She says she doesn’t only come to BronxWorks for the tax assistance, but for their variety of other programs as well.
“It’s so nice as a senior to have a place where they can help us,” said Vasquez. “Having these centers for us are really our saviors because they help us in so many ways, so being here is the only place I know I could go.”
BronxWorks offers a variety of services like Bronx Peach, in collaboration with Montefiore Medical Center, which assists qualified Bronx residents who have children with disabilities. They also have a financial empowerment program to help people with financial education and counseling.
