News 12's Katie Lusso is checking out how Brooklyn residents are dealing with the frigid temperatures throughout the borough.

On top of the low temperatures, there are strong wind gusts that can be dangerously cold.

The city is encouraging people to check in on their family, friends and neighbors, especially older adults or people with disabilities, to make sure they have heat.

If you do lose heat, you can try to insulate your home by hanging blankets over windows and doorways.

If you are using an electric space heater, make sure it is plugged directly into the wall and away from flammable items. Do not use your stove to heat your home, and make sure your carbon monoxide alarm is working.

There is also a code blue in effect, so if you see anyone who's living on the streets, you can call 311 and an outreach team will bring them to a shelter.
