Adones Betances, 26, has been sentenced to life without parole in the murder of 18-year-old Winston Ortiz.

Police say an argument between Ortiz and Betances led to the murder and took place over Ortiz’s relationship with Betances’ sister. This led Betances to stab Ortiz multiple times before pouring gasoline over him and burning him alive.

Ortiz’s family has been fighting in court for justice for their loved one for the last four years. During Thursday’s sentencing, Betances declined to show his face in court.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark says that while this is a trying time for the Ortiz family, she is confident that they will turn this pain into purpose.
