Manhole explosions have
caused power outages in some parts of the city, leaving several families in the dark.
Fire officials told News 12 they
responded to an active manhole explosion with a
high carbon monoxide reading around 9 a.m. Friday at
1000 Hancock St. in Canarsie.
News 12 is told that explosion left several residents without
power, with some even having to evacuate their homes.
Other manholes also erupted in Bed-Stuy, Flatbush and Park
Slope after the storm.
Con Edison told News 12 that “after the snow passes,
it becomes an underground event, the melting snow and ice mixes with the road
salt and gets into the underround electric delivery system and can cause
problems there, which causes those customers to lose service. It causes manhole
smoke and fires, and we respond to those as
quickly as possible to get those customers back up and in service.”
The FDNY also
took to Twitter Friday, urging New Yorkers who see a manhole that is smoking to
call 911. Carbon monoxide buildup could potentially lead to an explosion.
