NYPD Chief of Patrol Fausto B. Pichardo’s abrupt decision to retire came as a shock to many,
and sources claim the decision stemmed from micromanagement coming from the mayor’s office.
However, on Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio said those claims are not accurate. De Blasio has denied any accusations of meddling with the NYPD chain of command.
He says he has a close relationship with the NYPD and that Chief Pichardo will speak for himself.
Pichardo addressed the announcement on Twitter saying, “As I officially announce my retirement, I want to thank all of the men and women of the NYPD for the remarkable work that you do day in and day out for all New Yorkers. Every interaction that you have is an opportunity to forge a greater bond with those we serve.”
Pichardo was the first Dominican chief of patrol in NYPD history and previously served as a commanding officer at the 43rd Precinct in the Bronx.
He is described as a true middleman that New Yorkers could trust.
"We have a true leader, a proven leader, with integrity and compassion for the community. If we don't get him back, I don't know where we are going to go,” said Councilman Fernando Cabrera.
