Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani appoints NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch as top cop
Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has announced the appointment of Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch to serve as the New York City Police Commissioner in his incoming administration.

Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani announced Wednesday that Jessica Tisch will continue to serve as NYPD commissioner under his new administration.
Mamdani and Tisch made their first public appearance together on Wednesday morning while in lower Manhattan at a memorial honoring fallen police officers.
“To me, it is very meaningful that [Mamdani] asked to come here as our first public venture to visit the memorial with me and with some of our officers here,” said Tisch.
Mamdani has long said he wanted to keep Tisch as the city's top cop.
He cited her track record of rooting out corruption in the NYPD and delivering what he called a “historic reduction in violent crime.”
The two said they share similar goals in keeping New Yorkers safe and giving officers the resources they need to do their job.
“So many of these responsibilities continue only to increase, ” said Mamdani. “It’s time to make sure police officers can do policing and that we have a department of community safety that can take on these other issues.”
Patrick Hendry, president of the city’s Police Benevolent Association, said the PBA is happy that Tisch is staying on as commissioner. Hendry called the move “a good step forward” and said Tisch understands what officers go through on a daily basis.
“Commissioner Tisch is the right person at the right time to continue to keep this police department on a steady path,” said Hendry.
But Hendry added that the PBA is concerned about recruitment, retention and pay within the department.
He said he plans on addressing it with Mamdani.
Tisch declined to address the concerns during her appearance with Mamdani.
