Memorial Day 2020: How to enjoy the weekend safely and remember the holiday's meaning
By Bob Doda, News 12 Digital
After what seems like years of clamoring inside our homes, Memorial Day weekend has arrived and the urge to go outside to soak up the sunshine is real.
But whether you are going outside or staying in, there are plenty of ways to celebrate safely.
First, a little background on the holiday.
According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, “Memorial Day is to remember and honor all military personnel who died in the service of our country, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle.” It was first established three years after the Civil War but known as Declaration Day and always held on May 30. It was moved to last Monday in May in 1971 when Memorial Day was declared a national holiday.
So, why not do something patriotic, like create your own red poppie tissue paper pin or create some patriotic chalk art on the driveway.

You can always take it to your backyard too for some healthy competition.

If you are looking to get off the block, it’s easy to find your nearest walkable trails. Take off the flops/slippers, slap on some rubber soles and make some tracks.
Just thinking about all that hiking and enjoying the local environment is making me hungry. For those that indulge in meat, it’s basically your patriotic duty to eat a cheeseburger. It’s not hard to make.
The perfect way to end your day is with a campfire. Those with a fire pit know how peaceful it can be to sit, chat, and enjoy the warmth, especially in these surreal times.
And don’t forget about the annual Memorial Day Concert on May 24.
