Day of the Dead is upon us, and La Sirena, a Mexican folk art shop in the East Village, is a one-stop shop for everything Día De Los Muertos.
The owner Dina Leor, who is not Mexican, says she noticed an uptick in New Yorkers from all cultures celebrating Day of the Dead after the release of the movie Coco in 2017.
"In New York over the years, it's just gotten bigger and bigger. Traditionally Mexican people and lots of other Latin American countries will celebrate, but now more people from here are celebrating also honoring their ancestors," Leor says. "I don't really have that cultural appropriation thing. If we share our traditions, that's beautiful, as long as you share them and honor them in a respectful way."
