As volunteer fire and emergency medical service agencies struggle to keep up with staffing needs, recruiters at Mohegan EMS believe they have found a way to attract new candidates to serve their community.
The group said they have successfully recruited 35 new volunteers since April.
Matt Kness, the chief, said they were able to do so because they got creative with their recruiting strategy.
They now offer more flexible hours, recruit at community events and have moved their application online.
"We have seen a higher percentage since then of people coming around during the day, coming around at night saying, 'I want to be there,'" Kness said.
Kness said they want to be a model for other agencies that are struggling to get new volunteers.
