About 50 people showed up Monday to Club Metro USA in Freehold.
Owner Adam Mintz says he provided the governor with safety protocols for reopening, but has not received a response.
Gov. Murphy announced Monday gyms and fitness centers can reopen soon at reduced capacity, but he did not provide a specific date.
Mintz made the decision on his own.
"We went above and beyond at our club to ensure safety for our members and staff, and we think we've done everything possible to ensure a good experience and a safe experience when you walk into our gym," says Mintz.
As with a number of businesses, the gym needs to bring in money in order to pay bills and stay open in the long run.
