When it comes to the number of registered organ donors, New York is ranked at number 50, with only a quarter of the state's residents on the list.
The first ever Organ Donor Enrollment Day took place on Tuesday at Montefiore Medical Center. The event was organized by LiveOnNY, a group that works with transplant centers and hospitals like Montefiore.
Medical professionals say more than 120,000 people are on the national transplant list, with about 10 percent of those people waiting for organs in New York.
Sixty-two organ donors were recovered from the Bronx since January 2014, but organizers say that is not enough.
New York needs to double the amount of organ donors to meet the national average.
Every 18 hours, a New Yorkers dies waiting for a lifesaving transplant.
