After countless car accidents, Morris Park residents say they've been pushing the Department of Transportation to install stop signs and speed bumps in their neighborhood – but it keeps getting denied.
Rhinelander Avenue is a breeding ground for car accidents, according to people who live in the area.
They say no fatal accidents have happened yet, but they want stop signs, traffic lights, and speed bumps installed now, before it's too late.
Yahay Obeid is the newly voted first Muslim vice chair of Community Board 11. He says with the Bronx Muslim Center down the road, where hundreds of children are let out of the building at a time, it's a disaster waiting to happen.
"The city usually is not proactive. They wait for things to happen. We've had numerous things happen. This is the time for it," Obeid says. "In 2017, we requested a stop sign. In 2018, we received a response with a denial."
The community requested for it to be reconsidered again last year but claim they have not received a response.
Just one block away is a busy park, and further up Rhinelander Avenue, is a school.
The city's DOT told News 12, "DOT will look into restudying the intersection, as well as other treatments to deter speeding at this location."
Until then, the community says it's a waiting game, and that they no more accidents happen in the meantime.
