Alumni of sororities Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta held an event in the Bronx on Saturday to get people active and thinking about heart health.
The annual “Pink Goes Red” event, in honor of American Heart Month, was held inside the Forest Gym in Morrisania.
Attendees participated in a self-defense class for kids, Zumba for adults, free blood pressure and glucose screenings, as well as health and nutrition tips.
“So today is one of our impact days, ‘Pink Goes Red,’ where we educate the Bronx about health care, specifically heart issues pertaining to women," said Donna Joseph from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.
Althea Kitchens of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. said that the event, which has been held annually for six years, aims to bring awareness of heart health to the Bronx. The borough is number 62 out of all the counties in New York State as far as health concerns.
News 12 was told that last year more than 150 people attended and that even more was expected for last year.
