The mother of a man who killed himself after serving time on Rikers Island in 2015 has died of a heart attack, according to officials.
Venida Browder died on Friday at Saint Barnabas Hospital following complications from a heart attack.
Her son, Kalief, took his life back in June 2015 after spending years inside Rikers jail for allegedly stealing a backpack without being convicted.
During his time in jail, Browder spent 400 days in solitary confinement.
His death prompted Mayor Bill de Blasio to reform the jail and stop solitary confinement for 16 and 17-year-old inmates.
His mother's death comes less than a week after Jay Z announced he is producing a new docuseries on Browder's life.
The family lawyer is quoted telling reporters he believes she died of a "broken heart."
