The MTA Board unanimously approved its $68.4 billion spending plan at a meeting Wednesday, the largest in the agency’s history.
The Long Island Rail Road will receive $6 billion from the plan. The MTA plans to retire the railroad’s aging M3 train cars from the 1980s, replacing them with approximately 160 new cars. Other funds will be used to improve ADA accessibility and study the possible electrification of the Port Jefferson Branch and the track between Ronkonkoma and Yaphank.
A majority of the funds will be used to maintain the current system. The budget must be approved by lawmakers in Albany.
