The Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board approved multiple toll and fare increases Wednesday that will go into effect in August.
The unanimous vote will provide a 4.3% fare increase for Metro-North and Long Island Railroad fares.
Commuters can receive a 10% discount for monthly tickets.
City tickets will expand to peak trains that will be available for $7. Those taking buses and subways will see a jump in fares by 15 cents, going from $2.75 to $2.90.
MTA Chairman Janno Lieber said Wednesday that he blames rising costs for the need to increase fares. He says he hopes the fares will help preserve service.
"We all need to accept that the MTA raising fares 4% when surrounding inflation of the last several years is well in excess of that is responsible and what it delivers is, balanced budget that preserves service," Lieber says.
Some Long Islanders told News 12 they are OK with the rise in cost while others say are completely against it.
"I think it's ridiculous," says Vince Sciabarass, of Dix Hills. "Actually, I think they have to get their act together, I think that they still have a lot more service issues. I think that right now, it's not really the right time to raise prices."
Those hoping to drive to avoid the hikes on the rails will have to pay a 5.5% increase using EZ Pass on tolls for the Whitestone Bridge and the Verrazano Bridge.
Others also say that congestion price in the city will make it costly to drive.
The LIRR will also start testing a ticket for Far Rockaway commuters.
The fare changes for tolls are expected to go into effect on Aug. 6 and on Aug. 20 for mass transit.
