Evidence was submitted to the jury today in the trial of a former NYPD officer accused of killing his wife and dumping her body near a Westchester highway. Prosecutors say Edwin Coello strangled his estranged wife, Tina Adovasio, and left her body in the woods off the Taconic Parkway in Yorktown Heights. Coello originally told police that his wife, a nursing student at Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, disappeared from their home in March 2011. The prosecution presented the jury with text messages exchanged between Coello and his wife. However, the judge eventually dismissed the messages as evidence. Photos of the crime scene were also showed to the courtroom. The trial continues tomorrow, when the jury is expected to see surveillance video of Coello's home and hear from a DNA specialist. Coello's lawyers say he is not guilty of second-degree murder. If found guilty, the former cop faces 25 years to life behind bars.
