Could birthright citizenship be in jeopardy?
President Donald Trump says he wants to sign an executive order ending birthright citizenship.
The 14th Amendment states: "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States."
Critics argue you need an amendment to change the Constitution, not an executive order. Amendments are approved with a two-thirds vote in the House and the Senate, then ratified by the states or by constitutional convention.
Article V of the Constitution gives the president no official role in the amendment process.
An executive order is an official statement from the president about how the federal agencies he oversees can use their resources.
