A Nassau County police officer and first responder who died of a 9/11-related illness was laid to rest Wednesday.
Hundreds lined on Stewart Avenue in Garden City for a funeral procession honoring officer Matthew Perlungher.
He died last week nearly two decades after responding to the Sept. 11 terror attack to help with the search and recovery efforts.
Perlungher is the eighth Nassau officer to die of exposure to fatal toxins at ground zero.
He was a Navy veteran and a 24-year member of the Nassau County Police Department who loved working with children in the Police Athletic League.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says it was in Perlungher’s “soul to give back” and he was all about service.
The commissioner honored Perlungher’s lifelong service with a posthumous promotion.
“As we walked into this service today, an order was cut by the Nassau Police Department posthumously promoting police officer Matthew Perlungher to Detective First Grade Matthew Perlungher,” Ryder says.
The hometown hero’s daughter, Emma Perlungher, says her father loved "Star Wars," softball and his family.
Matthew Perlungher had spent the past decade of his life raising money and awareness for childhood cancer after losing his 6-year-old son Jack to the disease.
The first responder was buried at Calverton National Cemetery with full military honors.
