As the city government pushes forward on projects, the Voice of Gowanus is aiming to stop at least one. 

The rezoning in Gowanus is expected to start next week, and the group is raising money through its Gowanus Legal Defense Fund to consider all legal options in battling the city-led project.

"More than two times the size of Hudson yards, more than two times the size of Atlantic yards and blanket the Gowanus neighborhood with more than 15 luxury apartment towers,” said Jack Riccobono. 

Many neighbors have expressed serious concerns about adding apartments to an area that is a designated Superfund site--including affordable housing. 

"It's a strange thing for people who claim to be advocates of people in need of affordable housing to say oh well come to this neighborhood. here's your house on the most poisonous land in the state of New York,” said resident Penn Rhodeen. 

Others say the neighborhood is not equipped for the added burden to infrastructure, including raw sewage overflow. 

The certification process for the rezoning starts next week and historically it's been hard for residents to stop the process once it's started.

The group declined to comment on its legal timeline or possible actions.
