The nephew of Brooklyn actor Michael K. Williams is speaking out about the importance of International Overdose Awareness Day.
Williams died from an overdose in 2021. His nephew, Dominic Dupont, spoke at the Samaritan Daytop Village in The Bronx on Thursday.
Samaritan Daytop is a facility that provides a holistic approach for those with behavioral health needs, including substance use programs and peer-based recovery services.
Dupont says his uncle's shocking passing is what prompted him to speak about the dangers of opioids and overdose.
"I could see Michael winking at us, I could see Michael understanding and appreciating that we are doing this work to raise awareness," said Dupont. "That even though this was a tragedy, we are going to triumph by way of this tragedy and help save lives."
